接続詞asは複数の意味を持つため、前後の文脈と語順から意味を判断する必要がある。
(1) 様態「…するように」
Do as I say!
[V: Do] [as節: as I say]「私が言うように行動しなさい」
(2) 比例「…するにつれて」（比較級と一緒に使う場合が多い）
As the sun went down, the temperature dropped.
[as節: As the sun went down], [S: the temperature] [V: dropped]
(3) 譲歩「…であるけれども」（=though）語順が特殊：〈形容詞 + as + S + be動詞〉
Young as she was, she handled the crisis well.
[形容詞: Young] + as + [S: she] + [V: was], [S: she] [V: handled] [O: the crisis] [well]
「若いけれども」という譲歩の意味になる。
(4) 理由「…するので」（=because/since）
As it was raining, the event was cancelled.
(5) 時「…するとき/…する間」（=when/while）
As I was walking home, I noticed something strange.
